Hey Disney Vacationers! If you’re planning a Disney Cruise, you might hear about a “cruise placeholder” or “Disney Cruise placeholder.” And if you haven’t cruised yet, you can’t get one—at least not yet. But once you step on board, you’ll want to know all about it.
A Disney Cruise placeholder is Disney’s way of saying, “See ya real soon!” It’s a special offer that lets you put down a $250 deposit while on board, and in return, you get 10% off a future cruise. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? It’s a solid deal, but don’t wait too long—it comes with an expiration date.
Let’s break it all down.
The Disney Cruise Placeholder: What You Need to Know
You Can Only Buy It On Board
You can’t grab a placeholder before your cruise. You can only purchase it while on board, and you’ll do it through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. The option won’t even appear unless you’re connected to the ship’s WiFi.
The app makes it easy—it’s right at the top of the home screen and in a few other places. But don’t wait too long. The option disappears from the app on the final morning of your cruise. If you miss it, you’ll have to go to Guest Services before your cruise ends to grab one.
It’s $250, But It’s Not an Extra Fee
The $250 is a deposit toward your future cruise, not an extra charge. When you book your next cruise, that $250 will go toward the cost. If life happens and you don’t use it, no worries—it’s fully refundable. There’s literally no risk in getting one.
You Have 24 Months to Use It
Here’s the catch: you don’t have forever to use your placeholder. You have 24 months to cruise, not just to book. If you don’t sail within that timeframe, Disney will refund your deposit back to your original form of payment.
If you’re booking a cruise that’s 7 nights or longer, you’ll also get a reduced deposit. Another bonus that makes getting a placeholder even better.
How Many Placeholders Can You Get?
Each household can book up to two placeholders. When you book your future cruise, at least one adult from the original sailing must be in the party. This means you can’t just hand it off to a friend—it’s got to stay in your travel crew.
What Happens After You Get a Placeholder?
Once you’re back from your cruise, Disney Cruise Line will send you an email with the details of your placeholder and instructions on how to use it. If you booked your original cruise through a travel agent, the placeholder will automatically be tied to them.
Want to switch Disney travel agents or book directly through Disney? You’ve got 30 days to transfer your placeholder.
There Are Some Restrictions
A Disney Cruise placeholder is an awesome deal, but there are a few rules:
- No concierge cabins or suites – Placeholders can’t be used for these premium categories.
- No combining with other discounts – Special rates, Florida resident discounts, and other deals don’t stack with a placeholder.
- Some sailings are blocked – While most cruises qualify, there are some blackout dates.
- You can always cancel – If you find a better deal or change your mind, you can cancel your placeholder and apply the refund to another booking.
Is a Disney Cruise Placeholder Worth It?
Yes. If you think you might sail again, a placeholder is an easy way to save money with no risk. It’s fully refundable, gives you a discount, and keeps your Disney Cruise dreams alive for the next two years.
And let’s be real—once you’ve sailed with Disney, chances are you’ll want to go back.
