Hey Disney Vacationers, this is big.
For the first time ever, The Walt Disney Company is bringing the magic of its theme parks to the Middle East. That’s right—Disney has officially announced plans for a brand-new theme park resort in Abu Dhabi. And if you’re like me, you probably had to do a double-take to make sure you read that correctly. But it’s happening. And it’s going to be a game-changer.
What Is Disneyland Abu Dhabi?
Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be the seventh Disney theme park destination worldwide—and the first in the Middle East. It’s being developed in partnership with Miral, the company behind many of the top attractions on Yas Island, one of the UAE’s fastest-growing entertainment destinations.
The resort will combine beloved Disney stories and characters with the modern design and cultural identity of the UAE capital. This means immersive lands, themed hotels, dining, shopping, and possibly one of the most unique Disney castles we’ve ever seen.
Disney’s Role in the Project
Here’s how it breaks down:
- Miral will fund and build the resort.
- Disney Imagineering is leading the creative design.
- Disney operations experts will be embedded within the project to maintain Disney standards.
- Miral will manage the day-to-day operation of the resort once it opens.
This is similar to the model Disney uses in other global parks, like the Tokyo Disneyland Resort, which is operated by the Oriental Land Company.
First Look: A Sleek, Modern Castle
While official blueprints haven’t been released yet, early concept art hints at a sleek castle design, with inspiration pulled from the region’s architecture—especially landmarks like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The result looks like a modern reimagining of the classic Disney castle, rooted in local style.
Why Abu Dhabi?
Disney CEO Bob Iger didn’t hold back during the Q2 2025 earnings call. He made it crystal clear: this wasn’t just about finding a new spot on the map—it was about meeting real demand.
“We did study the region very carefully, and we know we had many opportunities. Obviously, building a theme park in a location is a huge endorsement of the location… speaks volumes of the ability of that location to sustain a Disney theme park.”
Iger highlighted how hundreds of millions of people in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia are income-qualified but far from Disney’s current parks. Abu Dhabi fixes that problem by bringing Disney to them.
“It was very obvious to us that there were many people… where a trip to one of our six locations was pretty lengthy in nature and expensive. We felt the best way to reach those people is to bring our product to them.”
He also pointed to the wild success of Disney Cruise Line in Singapore with the upcoming maiden voyage of the Disney Adventure as proof of regional demand:
“When we decided to build a cruise ship and put it in Singapore… we put it on sale just a few months ago… sold out in a matter of days. There is clearly a desire… to engage with Disney in a wide region.”
And just in case you’re wondering if this will hurt other Disney parks, Iger was clear:
“We do not view this as in any way cannibalistic to places where [we] operate.”
Disney’s Confidence in Abu Dhabi
Iger explained that several factors pushed Abu Dhabi to the top of the list:
- Reach: 500 million income-qualified people live within four hours of Abu Dhabi.
- Scale: Over 125 million passengers are expected to travel through Dubai and Abu Dhabi this year.
- Tourism: Abu Dhabi is targeting 39 million tourists annually by 2030.
- Culture and innovation: The region values creativity, quality, and technology.
- Infrastructure: Projects like the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and bold architectural landmarks impressed Disney leadership.
- Miral partnership: Disney and Miral quickly aligned on values and vision.
“Everywhere we looked, we were convinced that this was a perfect place for us,” Iger said. “We immediately bonded with [Miral]… we both have a real appreciation of our history and legacy, but moving forward and being forward-thinking and innovating is also part of our DNA.”
Who Is Miral?
Miral is no stranger to bold ideas. For over a decade, they’ve helped shape Yas Island into a major entertainment destination.
They are the team behind Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and more. Miral brings together people, cultures, and world-class brands to deliver experiences that leave a mark.
They’re focused on creating lasting memories, driving innovation, and building a sustainable future for tourism in the region. It’s this mix of vision and execution that made them a natural fit for Disney.
What Will Disneyland Abu Dhabi Include?
So far, Disney and Miral have confirmed the following:
- A full-scale Disney theme park
- Themed hotels and resort accommodations
- Shopping, dining, and entertainment options
- Attractions that blend Disney storytelling with Abu Dhabi’s local identity
Josh D’Amaro described the project as Disney’s most advanced and interactive resort ever, saying:
“The location of our park is incredibly unique – anchored by a beautiful waterfront – which will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways.”
Opening Timeline
Disney hasn’t released a construction timeline yet. But based on the timeline of Shanghai Disneyland, we can estimate around five years from groundbreaking to opening.
So while there’s no set date, the project is definitely moving forward.
Final Thoughts
The Disneyland Abu Dhabi announcement is more than a press release. It’s a shift in how and where Disney delivers its magic. With a growing demand in the Middle East and surrounding regions, this move opens up the Disney experience to a whole new audience.
And with Miral leading development and Disney Imagineers bringing the magic, this could become one of the most unique and innovative parks Disney has ever created.
