Busy Will Epic Universe Be

Hey Universal Vacationers! Let’s talk real for a second. Everyone’s asking the same thing: How busy will Epic Universe be when it opens this summer?

And the honest answer is this—it’s going to feel busy. Really busy. But maybe not for the reasons you think.

I’ve been tracking this park since the first construction permits were filed. I’ve watched the news roll out, the ticket sales open, and the rumors spread like wildfire. And now that we’re in the final countdown to the May 22, 2025, opening date, it’s time to cut through the noise.

I’m going to walk you through everything we know—and everything you need to plan around if you’re heading to Epic Universe this summer.

Let’s break it down.

This Is the First Brand-New Theme Park in Over 25 Years

The last one was Disney’s Animal Kingdom on April 1, 1998. That’s wild. Most people visiting Epic Universe have never experienced a new theme park opening in their lifetime.

That means the hype is real. And anytime something gets this kind of hype, people show up.

Bloggers, Vloggers, and Media Flood the Opening Week

The opening week of Epic Universe will be bananas.

Expect a sea of bloggers, vloggers, influencers, and theme park YouTubers out to get the perfect shot of Stardust Racers or the first ride-through of Battle at the Ministry. It’s going to be a media zoo.

But by mid-summer, some of that crowd will fade. The vloggers will move on to the next big thing. That’s when the real vacationers start showing up.

Tickets and Hotels Are Still Available—But That Doesn’t Mean It Won’t Feel Packed

At the time of writing, Universal still has hotel rooms and tickets available two weeks after opening day. That’s a red flag—or maybe a green one—depending on how you see it.

Rumor has it that demand is softer than Universal expected. And based on what I’m seeing with availability, I believe it.

But here’s the twist—Epic Universe can still feel packed even if fewer people are there.

Why? Because of ride capacity, downtime, weather, and how the ticketing works.

Universal’s Ticket Strategy Threw People Off

Originally, if you wanted to visit Epic Universe, you had to buy a multi-day ticket that only gave you one day at the new park—and no park hopping. That’s like dangling the best ride ever made in front of someone, then saying “but only for one day.”

This turned off a lot of people in my opinion.

Universal finally fixed this on March 13, 2025, by releasing standalone tickets for Epic Universe. But there’s a catch—you either:

  • Get one day ticket at full price, or
  • Pay multiple times for multiple single-day visits (ie full price for each day, no multi-day discount)

That adds up fast. Especially for families.

Epic Universe Attractions (and the Big Problem With Downtime)

Here’s a breakdown of what’s opening:

LandAttraction NameType
Dark UniverseMonsters Unchained: The Frankenstein ExperimentRide
Curse of the WerewolfRide
Super Nintendo WorldMario Kart: Bowser’s ChallengeRide
Mine-Cart MadnessRide
Yoshi’s AdventureRide
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of BerkThe Untrainable DragonShow
Hiccup’s Wing GlidersRide
Dragon Racer’s RallyRide
Fyre DrillRide
Wizarding World – Ministry of MagicHarry Potter and the Battle at the MinistryRide
Le Cirque ArcanusShow
Celestial ParkConstellation CarouselRide
Stardust RacersRide

That’s 11 rides and 2 shows total.

Now, here’s the issue—when one ride goes down, the others get slammed. Compounding the problem is some of the attractions at Epic Universe will have very limited ride capacity. According to Len Test of The Disney Dish, Mine-Cart Madness is about ~1,000 guests per hour (think Peter Pan’s Flight), and Dragon Racer’s Rally is about 400 guests (or about half of the Magic Kingdom’s Dumbo Flight).

That’s a problem because:

  • Several major rides are outdoors
  • Limited ride capacity
  • Summer thunderstorms in Orlando are a daily thing
  • You’ve got limited time (maybe one day) to do it all

If Battle at the Ministry or Stardust Racers goes down for an hour, the other lines spike.

And this park doesn’t have a lot of “downtime diversions” like trails or walkthroughs like Animal Kingdom does.

Epic Universe Has Fewer Attractions Than Disney’s Animal Kingdom Did at Opening

Here’s something worth thinking about—when Epic Universe opens, it will have fewer attractions than Disney’s Animal Kingdom (when Dinoland was fully open).

Even back then, Animal Kingdom included:

  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Dinosaur
  • Expedition Everest
  • Primevil Whirl
  • Triceratops Sping
  • It’s Tough to Be a Bug
  • Pangani Forest Exploration Trail
  • Maharajah Jungle Trek
  • Festival of the Lion King (Show)
  • Finding Nemo (Show)
  • Flight of Passage
  • Navi River Journey
  • Rafiki’s Planet Watch
  • Kali River Rapids

That gave guests multiple high-capacity rides, walkthroughs, and shows. And even with that lineup, Animal Kingdom still felt light on things to do for many guests.

Epic Universe, on the other hand, will open with 11 rides and 2 shows, but fewer non-ride experiences to help absorb crowds.

What does this mean? When a ride goes down, there are fewer places for people to go—which makes the park feel more crowded, even if the headcount is reasonable.

So… How Busy Will Epic Universe Be?

Let’s get to the bottom line.

Even if ticket sales are light, Epic Universe will still feel busy.

Here’s why:

  • Fewer total rides compared to other parks
  • Limited ride capacity
  • High chance of weather closures for outdoor attractions
  • Limited time for most guests to explore everything
  • High guest expectations from brand-new rides

Add it all up, and you’ve got high wait times, especially in the summer heat. Universal definitely expects large crowds, as the Harry Potter and the Battle of the Ministry queue is estimated to hold up to a four-hour line.

But There’s Good News: Express Pass Is Available

Want to skip the lines? Universal has you covered—if you’re willing to pay.

Included AttractionsNot Included Attractions

Fyre DrillHarry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders
Le Cirque Arcanus
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
Stardust Racers
The Untrainable Dragon
Yoshi’s Adventure

Price Range: Starts at $130. Expect $230–$260 per person for most summer dates.

Battle at the Ministry is not included. That one’s going to have a long wait. If you decide to go with an Express Pass for your day at Epic Universe, I would recommend rope-dropping Battle at the Ministry, then prioritizing Mine-Cart Madness for earlier in the day. Rope-dropping Mine-Cart Madness would not be the best option (unless you’re staying at a Universal Resort hotel), as SUPER NINTENDO WORLD will be part of Universal’s early entry for resort guests.

Staying at a Universal Hotel? Don’t Skip These Perks

Universal hotel guests—especially at Premier Hotels like the new Helios Grand Hotel at Epic Universe—get early park admission.

That means you can:

  • Enter the park one hour early
  • Beat the lines at the biggest attractions

This could be the difference between riding Battle at the Ministry in 45 minutes versus 3 hours. We are still awaiting all the details from Universal about which attractions will be part of early park admission.

Final Take: Should You Expect Epic Universe to Be Busy?

Yes. But not because it’s overcrowded. Because the ride structure and limitations make it feel that way.

The park is launching with fewer attractions, decent Express Pass coverage, and no park hopping for most ticket holders.

That creates a situation where demand is stacked on just a few rides. And if weather or tech issues pop up, wait times will explode.

Here’s my honest advice:

  • Get Express Pass if you can (especially, since you have one day to visit)
  • Book a VIP Tour if you’re going all out
  • Stay at a Universal hotel for early entry
  • Don’t assume “open availability” means low crowds

And most importantly—go in with a plan.

Because Epic Universe might look wide open on paper, but it’s going to feel like the hottest ticket of summer 2025.
