Hey Disney Vacationers! Disney is going full throttle with its new Cars Land expansion at Magic Kingdom, and we just got a fresh look at what’s coming. First announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, this new Cars-themed attraction will bring Lightning McQueen and the crew into Frontierland, where they’ll take on the rugged terrain like never before. And now, thanks to new concept art and behind-the-scenes details, we’re finally getting a glimpse at the ride vehicles and track layout. Buckle up—this is a game-changer. Let’s dive into this Magic Kingdom Cars Land update!
Sneak Peek at Cars-Themed Ride Vehicles
During The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen dropped some huge news: Disney is developing a brand-new type of ride vehicle for this attraction.
“Our primary goal is creating an emotional experience for our guests,” Hundgen told the crowd. “For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle. No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride in it.”
Translation? This isn’t your typical slow-moving dark ride. Disney wants these vehicles to feel alive. To get the feel just right, Imagineers went off-roading in the Arizona desert to test real-world driving over rocky terrain. This is the kind of action Lightning McQueen and Mater have never experienced—racing over rough paths, climbing mountain peaks, and dodging geysers.
But how do you bring that into a theme park ride? Imagineers partnered with a motocross company to build a real dirt track for testing. They loaded up a custom production vehicle with sensors and took it for a spin, gathering real-world driving data to help bring this experience to life.
“We’re using a customized production vehicle,” Hundgen explained. “It has sensors all over it, and we’re taking it for test drives on our dirt track to gather data on how the vehicle responds to different terrain. This is where we turn that feeling we want into real-world engineering.”
And the big question—what will the ride vehicles actually look like? Pixar’s team is hard at work designing new race car personalities for the attraction. Every car will have its own name and number, just like real race cars. Expect big personalities and dynamic movement unlike anything Disney has done before.
Cutting-Edge Ride System? Here’s What We Know
From the rumors out there, Disney might be using a groundbreaking ride system from Dynamic Attractions. Their Automatic Guided All-Terrain Vehicle system is built for rugged terrain, rapid accelerations, and thrilling near-miss elements—all without traditional ride tracks or could be modified to use a hidden track system.
Why does this matter? Because this ride system could deliver:
- Steep climbs and descents
- Outdoor racing conditions
- Multiple ride vehicles interacting with each other
- Completely unpredictable ride paths
Imagine speeding over rocky trails while other riders zoom past you. These vehicles are built to handle six passengers per car, giving every guest an immersive, high-energy experience.
And Dynamic Attractions isn’t a newcomer—these are the same ride engineers behind Test Track, Radiator Springs Racers, Soarin’, and Avatar Flight of Passage. If you’ve been on Spider-Man or Forbidden Journey at Universal, you’ve already experienced their work in action.
Possible Track Layout Revealed
In a new episode of We Call It Imagineering titled “Let’s Ride”, Imagineers Mark White and Michael Hundgen shared how the ride is shaping up—and it’s nothing like Radiator Springs Racers or Test Track.
This ride is all about off-road adventure.
“Speed is always something that we love to do,” said Hundgen. “It’s fun to go fast, but it’s also really fun to go over terrain, over hills, bumps, and rocky parts of the path.”
So instead of smooth high-speed racing, expect:
- Rocky terrain
- Hill climbs
- Uneven surfaces
- Unexpected bumps and turns
To make it feel real, Imagineers rented ATVs and tested different terrains before bringing in a motocross expert to help design a full-scale dirt track.
“We’ve been doing a lot of different experiential mock-ups that our creative partners in both engineering and creative can experience,” White explained. “We went out, rented some ATVs. We tried different terrain. From that trip, we developed certain features, and then we came back here and found a right partner who specializes in building motocross tracks around the world, and he helped us develop this entire track.”
And if you were hoping for a first look at the track layout, Disney gave us a sneak peek! The footage shows winding paths and elevation changes, which line up perfectly with the ride’s concept art.
The next step? Disney is refining how the ride vehicles move.
“In the dirt mock-up, I’m steering right now,” White shared. “The vehicle is going to steer itself through a track system. Do the two match, or does it feel totally different? So that’s the next big milestone for us.”
Final Thoughts
Disney isn’t just bringing Cars to Magic Kingdom—they’re reinventing how a Cars ride can work. Between a brand-new vehicle system, off-road racing, and interactive ride dynamics, this is shaping up to be one of the most exciting attractions in Walt Disney World history.
With Imagineers testing real-world off-road physics and Pixar designing brand-new Cars characters, this ride is set to deliver an experience unlike anything we’ve seen before. And if Dynamic Attractions is indeed behind the ride system, we’re looking at something that could redefine theme park technology.
We’ll keep you updated as Disney reveals more details—but for now, one thing’s clear: this isn’t just another Cars Land clone. This ride is revving up to be something completely unique.
