A Name That Goes a “Long Way”: The Story Behind McKim

From the wood floors to the hand-carved stone fireplace, every detail inside McKim’s Mile House tells a story—even the name!

The lounge is named after Sam McKim, a Disney Legend and concept artist who helped shape the original Frontierland at Disneyland Park. To honor McKim’s legacy, Imagineers took inspiration from mile houses—boarding houses that dotted the American frontier and provided weary travelers a place to rest.

Now, DVC Members can enjoy that same hospitality after an adventure with Princess Tiana or a concert with the Country Bears. The story of the lounge is that it’s operated by a fictional McKim family, known for welcoming travelers from all over.

Easter Eggs & Hidden Details

Disney Imagineers packed McKim’s Mile House with hidden details honoring Disney history:

  • Second Floor Boarding Rooms – While the upstairs area isn’t accessible to guests, the room doors feature names from Disney lore. One is reserved for Barnabas T. Bullion, the fictional owner of Big Thunder Mountain’s mining company. Another door bears the name M. Davis, a tribute to Disney Legend Marc Davis, one of the creative minds behind classic Disney attractions.
  • Sam McKim’s Legacy – Around the lounge, Members will spot original artwork and details inspired by McKim’s work, a subtle nod to the artist’s lasting impact on Disney Parks.

Kick Back and Rest Up in Style

Need a break? McKim’s Mile House offers a comfortable, themed escape in the heart of Frontierland.

A sign inside reads “The Frontier’s Best Kept Secret”, a clever nod to Disney Vacation Club’s old slogan: “Discover the best kept Disney secret.”

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Cozy sofas and chairs
  • Complimentary soft drinks
  • Rustic decor inspired by the frontier
  • Drawings and artwork said to be created by the fictional McKim children

Whether you’re resting between rides or grabbing a quick refreshment, this lounge is designed to make DVC Members feel right at home.
