Hey Disney Vacationers! Big news. On September 12, 2024, a Notice of Commencement permit was officially filed for the Test Track attraction at EPCOT. And guess who’s behind it? None other than Walt Disney Imagineering, with Icarus Exhibits listed as the contractor. This permit is exciting because the listed scope of work is to “install set elements.” Let’s dive into what this means and why Test Track themed set installation it’s a huge deal for fans of Disney attractions.
The Magic Behind Icarus Exhibits: Who Are They?
If you’re not familiar with Icarus Exhibits, it’s time to take notice. Icarus has been “solving the impossible since 1987,” making them the go-to company for custom-themed elements and fully immersive experiences. Their projects range from one-off show set pieces to multi-million-dollar attractions that wow guests at the biggest theme parks in the world. With over 36 years of experience, they’ve tackled some of the most complex projects in the industry.
When it comes to Walt Disney World, Icarus is no stranger. In fact, their relationship with Disney goes all the way back to the 1990s when they first collaborated with Imagineers at Magic Kingdom. Since then, Icarus has been involved in major projects like:
- Toy Story Land
- TRON: Lightcycle Run
- Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
- Tangled Theming
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
They’re the team Disney trusts when it comes to delivering top-notch immersive environments.
What Does the Test Track Permit Mean?
So, what exactly does this new permit for Test Track involve? Well, the details are a bit of a mystery right now. But based on Icarus’ previous work, we can expect some seriously jaw-dropping set pieces and theming. Icarus has created iconic elements for Disney, including the larger-than-life Toy Story characters in Toy Story Land and the sleek Lightcycle in the TRON Lightcycle Run queue.
They’ve also crafted incredible props for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, such as the ship perched atop Docking Bay 7 and the static droids and speeders scattered throughout the land. With that track record, it’s safe to say that Test Track is in very good hands.
A Peek Into Icarus Exhibits’ Past Projects
One of Icarus’ most recent high-profile projects was their work on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Back on May 28, 2024, the Disney Parks Blog highlighted Icarus’ role in bringing the attraction’s 32-foot-tall water tower to life. This towering piece of Disney magic stands as a testament to their craftsmanship and creative vision.
“Whenever we’re creating new experiences, we frequently work with trusted and valued industry leaders like Icarus,” said Peter Ricci, principal show manager at Walt Disney Imagineering. “That was no different for the construction of the beautiful water tower at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working with Icarus for more than two decades now, and their work as a longtime collaborator never ceases to amaze me.”
For Icarus, the pride they feel when working on these iconic projects runs deep. Mark Ireland, co-owner of Icarus, reflected on the completion of the water tower installation:
“There’s an immense sense of pride to know that you’ve built it. First, there’s a little bit of relief that everything turned out and was installed correctly, but mostly there’s pride.”
For Ireland’s co-owner, Drayton Knox, this pride is even more personal. Knox, a Florida native who grew up visiting Disney World, shared his thoughts:
“Growing up here in Florida, I’ve been going to Magic Kingdom since I was seven years old. Any time we work on anything at the park, it’s special. Working on an attraction like Tiana’s is really cool.”
Icarus and Disney: A Partnership Built on Trust
Over the years, Icarus has continued to grow and refine their craft, always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. One of their key team members, Jennifer Smith, spent over a decade working as an Imagineer before transitioning to Icarus General Manager. Her experience gives Icarus an edge when it comes to understanding Disney’s unique vision.
“My combined past of working for Disney and working with Icarus definitely helped prepare me for my role at Icarus today,” said Jennifer. “I am immensely proud of the work we produce for all of our clients. It is also quite fun to still have an opportunity to leave my mark at Disney!”
When Will We See the New Test Track?
Here’s what we know so far: based on the rate at which Disney has been filing permits for Test Track, it’s likely that the reimagined version will open in the second half of 2025. While Disney has yet to make an official announcement regarding the opening date, fans are eagerly waiting for more details to emerge.
One thing is certain: with Icarus Exhibits at the helm of the new themed set installation, the future of Test Track is looking bright, bold, and thoroughly immersive. Stay tuned as more updates come in!
