Phased Closure of DinoLand

Hey Disney Vacationers! Big changes are coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and it all starts with the phased closure of DinoLand USA. If you’re a fan of this dino-centric corner of the park, you’ll want to mark your calendars, because Disney has officially announced permanent closure dates for several of DinoLand’s attractions. This is all part of Disney’s ambitious plan to transform the area into the all-new Tropical Americas Land, with a projected completion date of 2027.

Let’s dive into everything we know about the phased closure of DinoLand and what you can expect as Disney ushers in this exciting new era at Animal Kingdom.

Phase One: Say Goodbye to TriceraTop Spin and More

First up, we have the confirmed closure dates for some of DinoLand’s most recognizable attractions. Beginning on January 13, 2025, the following experiences will permanently close to make way for the future Tropical Americas Land:

  • TriceraTop Spin: The charming, carnival-style spinner ride will close its doors. If you’ve ever wanted to ride a triceratops in circles one last time, now’s your chance.
  • Fossil Fun Games: Love the midway games where you can win dinosaur-themed prizes? These will also be closing permanently on the same date. It’s your last shot to try your hand at some carnival fun before they’re gone.
  • Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures Gift Shop: Known for its quirky dino souvenirs, this shop will also be closing its doors.

While it’s always bittersweet to say goodbye to beloved attractions, these closures are the first major steps in Disney’s vision to reimagine the area with a new tropical flair. This area will be the home of the Encanto attraction, as well as a unique carousel.

What’s Staying (For Now)

If you’re wondering what else might be on the chopping block, Disney has made it clear that not everything in DinoLand USA is closing just yet. As of now, the following attractions and dining spots will remain open:

  • DINOSAUR: The thrilling, time-traveling ride will stick around for a bit longer, but its days are likely numbered. More on that below.
  • The Boneyard: This kid-friendly playground is safe for now.
  • Restaurantosaurus: Dino-themed dining will still be available.
  • Dino-Bite Snacks and Trilo-Bites: These popular snack stands will continue serving up goodies for the foreseeable future.

But don’t get too comfortable—these may not survive beyond the second phase of closures.

Phase Two: The End of DINOSAUR (And the Birth of Indiana Jones)

Now, here’s where things get really interesting. In 2025, the second phase of the DinoLand USA closure will take place, and this time, it’ll hit one of the land’s most iconic attractions—DINOSAUR. This ride has been a staple of Animal Kingdom since the park’s opening, but it’s set to close sometime after February 12, 2025.

Why February 12? That’s the date of the Disney Vacation Club’s Moonlight Magic Event at Animal Kingdom. Disney seems intent on keeping DINOSAUR open for this exclusive event, likely to ensure DVC members get the most out of their special night. But shortly after, expect to see DINOSAUR close its doors for good.

While Disney hasn’t given an exact date for the closure, all signs point to mid-February 2025. This will be a major step in clearing the way for the complete transformation of the area, and rumor has it, the space could be reimagined as an Indiana Jones attraction, similar style ride to what’s found at Disneyland (whole new story). No official confirmation from Disney on that just yet, but it’s certainly a possibility to keep an eye on!

What’s Next for Tropical Americas Land?

The closure of DinoLand USA is just the beginning. By 2027, Disney plans to unveil Tropical Americas Land, a brand-new area inspired by the lush landscapes, vibrant cultures, and wildlife of Central and South America. New attractions and experience will be inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones.

As Disney continues its tradition of reimagining and expanding the magic, fans can look forward to seeing how this new land will bring a fresh wave of excitement to Animal Kingdom.

Final Thoughts

The phased closure of DinoLand USA marks the end of an era, but it also paves the way for something completely new and exciting at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While we’re sad to say goodbye to favorites like TriceraTop Spin and DINOSAUR, the promise of a new Tropical Americas Land is sure to keep the excitement alive.

If you’re planning a trip to Animal Kingdom before January 2025, be sure to experience these classic attractions one last time. And stay tuned as more details emerge about what’s next for the future of Animal Kingdom.
