Tropical Americas Permit Approved

Hey Disney Vacationers! The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has granted an Individual Environmental Resource Permit for Project Ro, also known as Disney’s Tropical Americas expansion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This milestone confirms that Disney can move forward with the redevelopment of Dinoland U.S.A. into a Tropical Americas-themed area. The permit (No. 48-111978-P), issued on February 6, 2025, covers 12.87 acres and includes important changes to existing infrastructure. With the Tropical Americas permit approved, let’s take a deeper look at the project.

Permit Details and Project Scope

The approved permit lets Walt Disney Parks and Resorts US, Inc. modify infrastructure to support the new Tropical Americas land. Key updates include:

  • Relocation of parking, sidewalks, and utilities.
  • Improvements to the stormwater drainage system, linking it with the existing wet detention system.
  • Compliance with state water quality standards under Section 401 of the Clean Water Act.

Operational and Environmental Considerations

  • No new land use changes: Disney will upgrade existing infrastructure without extra land development.
  • Wetland protections: No wetlands will be affected, and the permit aligns with Disney Wilderness Preserve efforts.
  • Wildlife safeguards: The area has been checked for protected species. If any are found, Disney will follow mitigation steps.
  • Water and wastewater: Reedy Creek Energy Services will supply these utilities, and reclaimed public water will support irrigation.

Next Steps for Disney

With the Tropical Americas permit approved, Disney can begin work on drainage updates and construction. The permit remains valid until February 6, 2030, unless changed or challenged through a public hearing process.

What to Expect from Tropical Americas

Disney refers to this new area as Pueblo Esperanza (“Hope Town”). This land replaces DinoLand U.S.A. and will bring fresh attractions and immersive settings. Planned experiences include:

  • Encanto-themed attraction: Guests will explore the magical casita and celebrate Antonio’s gift of talking with animals.
  • Indiana Jones adventure: This ride will replace DINOSAUR in early 2026, taking travelers on a quest through a Maya temple.

Tropical Americas will offer themed dining, live entertainment, and lush surroundings inspired by the region’s natural beauty and vibrant culture. Disney aims to create a space that honors the spirit of the Americas while adding new energy to Animal Kingdom.
