Hey Disney Vacationers! Big news for Disney’s Animal Kingdom—Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) has officially filed a Notice of Commencement permit for the installation of set elements at the Tree of Life Theater. This permit signals the next step in bringing an all-new Zootopia-themed show to the park, replacing It’s Tough to be a Bug with Zootopia: Better Zoogether. Let’s look at what we learn from the Zootopia Better Zoogether set installation permit.
What the Zootopia Better Zoogether Set Installation Permit Means
The permit gives the green light for construction work inside the Tree of Life Theater, setting the stage for the upcoming Zootopia show. While specific details of the installation remain under wraps, Disney’s history with similar projects gives us a good idea of what to expect—detailed theming, immersive storytelling, and high-quality set pieces.

Icarus Exhibits: The Go-To Disney Contractor
For this project, Disney has tapped Icarus Exhibits, a longtime WDI collaborator. Icarus Exhibits has been involved in some of the most high-profile projects at Walt Disney World, including:
- The current Test Track reimagining
- The theming of Toy Story Land
- The construction of TRON: Lightcycle Run
- Set pieces for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
- The Tangled-themed rest area in Magic Kingdom
- Props and set design for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
Since the 1990s, Icarus Exhibits has worked with Disney to bring ambitious projects to life. Their specialty? Custom theming for immersive environments, show set pieces, and large-scale park elements.
Icarus Exhibits: A Legacy of Theming Excellence
Icarus Exhibits was founded in 1987 with a mission to build themed environments that push creative and technical limits. Their team of designers and craftsmen transform creative concepts into tangible experiences. Whether it’s a single show element or a multi-million-dollar installation, Icarus takes on challenges that other companies might avoid.
Back in May 2024, Disney Parks Blog showcased Icarus’ work on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, highlighting the massive 32-foot water tower inside the attraction. Peter Ricci, Principal Show Manager at WDI, shared:
“Whenever we’re creating new experiences, we frequently work with trusted and valued industry leaders like Icarus. That was no different for the construction of the beautiful water tower at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working with Icarus for more than two decades now, and their work as a longtime collaborator never ceases to amaze me.”
Icarus co-owner Mark Ireland echoed that sentiment:
“There’s an immense sense of pride to know that you’ve built it. First, there’s a little bit of relief that everything turned out and was installed correctly, but mostly there’s pride.”
For co-owner Drayton Knox, a lifelong Florida resident, Disney projects hold special meaning:
“Growing up here in Florida, I’ve been going to Magic Kingdom since I was seven years old. Any time we work on anything at the park, it’s special. Working on an attraction like Tiana’s is really cool.”
Jennifer Smith, Icarus’ General Manager, previously worked as a Walt Disney Imagineer. Her experience on both sides of the industry gives Icarus a unique edge in theme park fabrication.
“My combined past of working for Disney and working with Icarus definitely helped prepare me for my role at Icarus today, as I have a deep understanding and respect for both sides of the work. I am immensely proud of the work we produce for all of our clients. It is also quite fun to still have an opportunity to leave my mark at Disney!”

What to Expect Inside the Tree of Life Theater
Details on how much will change inside the Tree of Life Theater remain unknown. However, based on concept art, the theater will likely maintain its organic, natural look while introducing Zootopia-specific elements. One major expected update is the replacement of the current Hopper Audio-Animatronic with a Clawhauser figure.
Icarus has a strong history of crafting Disney set pieces, including:
- Toy Story Land character sculptures
- The Lightcycle in TRON Lightcycle Run
- The ship atop Docking Bay 7 in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
- The static droids and speeders found throughout Galaxy’s Edge
Given their past work, it’s likely that Icarus will be responsible for key set pieces, props, and themed signage for Zootopia: Better Zoogether.
Timeline for the Zootopia Show Installation
- It’s Tough to be a Bug closes permanently on March 17, 2025
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether is set to open in Winter 2025
- An exact opening date has not yet been announced
With the permit now active, installation work will soon begin inside the theater. This marks the final phase of transformation before guests experience the new Zootopia adventure.
Final Thoughts
The Zootopia: Better Zoogether set installation permit is a major milestone in bringing this new experience to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. With Icarus Exhibits leading the fabrication, the show is poised to deliver high-quality theming and immersive storytelling. As work progresses inside the Tree of Life Theater, Disney fans can expect more updates on this exciting addition.
Stay tuned for more details as the opening date approaches!
