Disney Disability Access Service

Hey Disney vacationers! Disney parks have long been celebrated for their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that all guests, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the magic that Disney has to offer. In a significant move, Disney has announced sweeping changes to the Disney Disability Access Service (DAS) program, aimed at enhancing the experience for guests with disabilities. Here’s a deep dive into what’s changing, why it matters, and how it affects your next visit to Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Disney’s Official Statement Breakdown

Disney’s recent announcement has sparked a lot of interest among the Disney community. The company stated, “Today, we updated our Accessibility Services websites for the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, which showcase a variety of tools guests can use to plan their visit, make their time with us more enjoyable and help identify the services they require. Along with the updates to the websites, we are also taking steps to preserve our existing accessibility services to ensure that the guests who truly need these services continue to receive them.

But what does this mean for guests who rely on DAS? Here are the key takeaways from Disney’s announcement:

  1. Enhanced Cast Member Support and Training: Disney is not just adding more Cast Members to assist with accessibility services; it’s also investing in specialized training. This move aims to ensure that guests receive informed, empathetic support that’s tailored to their specific needs.
  2. Pre-Arrival Engagement Through Virtual Chats: Recognizing the importance of planning and preparation for guests with disabilities, Disney is introducing the option to engage with Accessibility Services teams via virtual video chats before arriving at the parks. This proactive approach is designed to streamline the process and provide peace of mind for guests.
  3. Partnership with Inspire Health Alliance: To maintain the integrity of the DAS program, Disney is collaborating with Inspire Health Alliance. Health professionals will assist in determining eligibility for accommodations, ensuring that they are provided only to guests for whom they are intended.
  4. Focused Preservation of DAS: Disney is taking steps to ensure that DAS remains available for guests who, due to developmental disabilities like autism, cannot wait in conventional queues. Changes include extending DAS enrollment from 60 to 120 days and adjusting the party size to a maximum of four, with exceptions for immediate family members.
  5. Implementation Dates: These updates will take effect on May 20 at Walt Disney World Resort and on June 18 at Disneyland Resort.

DAS: Now Through May 19th

For guests visiting Walt Disney World from April 9 through May 19, 2024, the current DAS system remains in place. This includes the availability of pre-arrival conversations to determine eligibility, in-person registration at Guest Relations, and the ability to book up to two one-hour return windows for select experiences. It’s important to note that in-person registration will no longer be available after May 19, 2024.

DAS Moving Forward

Starting May 20 at Disney World and June 18 at Disneyland, significant changes will be implemented:

  • Registration via Live Video Chat: Guests can determine eligibility through a live video chat with a Cast Member, starting 30 days in advance of their park visit. This marks a shift towards a more accessible and convenient registration process. (Please note live chat in currently only available in English).
  • DAS Request Approved: After a conversation with a Cast Member to determine eligibility, the Guest with a disability (or a parent/guardian) will participate in the registration process. This requires having a photo taken of the DAS-registered Guest. DAS registration maximum party size is the registered DAS Guest and up to 3 additional party members, for a total of 4 people.
  • Ride Requests on the Day of Visit: Once registered and inside the theme park, guests can request their first return time. This can be done through the My Disney Experience mobile app or directly with a Cast Member at Guest Relations.

Understanding DAS Validity Changes

One of the significant changes to the DAS program involves the length of time for which the service is valid once a guest is registered. This adjustment is part of Disney’s effort to make the program more accessible and convenient for guests with disabilities, ensuring that those who need these accommodations can plan their visits with greater ease and assurance.

DAS Validity Until May 19th, 2024

For guests visiting Walt Disney World from April 9 through May 19, 2024, under the current system, the DAS is valid for up to 30 days from the start of the registration. This means that once guests have registered for DAS, either through pre-arrival conversations or in-person at Guest Relations, they can use the service for any visits that fall within this 30-day period. It’s important for guests to note that if their service period elapses, they will need to re-register for DAS.

Changes to DAS Validity Starting May 20th, 2024

The updates announced by Disney include a significant extension of this validity period. Starting May 20th at Walt Disney World and June 18th at Disneyland:

  • Extended DAS Enrollment Validity: The enrollment for DAS is now extendable up to 120 days for eligible guests. This four-month period significantly increases the flexibility and convenience for guests with disabilities, allowing for more extensive planning and utilization of the DAS across multiple visits within this timeframe.
  • Re-registration Requirements: Once the 120-day service period has elapsed, guests will need to re-register for DAS. This process can be initiated through the new live video chat system, making it more accessible for guests to renew their DAS without needing to be at the park.

Why These Changes Matter

Disney’s overhaul of the DAS program is a response to the program’s growing demand and the unfortunate rise in misuse. By tightening eligibility criteria and enhancing the registration process, Disney aims to ensure that the service benefits those it’s intended for. This move not only preserves the integrity of the DAS program but also reflects Disney’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

Looking Ahead

As these changes roll out, Disney’s dedication to providing a magical experience for all guests remains clear. The introduction of new procedures and the collaboration with health professionals are significant steps toward ensuring that guests with disabilities receive the accommodations most appropriate for their needs.

For families and individuals planning their visit, these updates mean a more streamlined, supportive, and equitable experience. Disney’s efforts to adapt and improve its services underscore the company’s commitment to making every visit special, ensuring that the magic of Disney is accessible to all.

Remember, these changes are designed with your best interests at heart. As we look forward to experiencing the magic of Disney, these updates to the Disability Access Service promise to make the Happiest Places on Earth even more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
