What is Hollywood Studios Rope Drop?
Rope Drop at Hollywood Studios is more than just the park opening its gates. It’s your golden ticket to beating the crowds and experiencing top attractions with minimal wait times. This early start is crucial for those eager to make the most out of their day in the park. When it comes to the Disney World parks, if you’re only going to rope drop once during your trip, this is park to do it.
Understanding Rope Drop
‘Rope Drop’ isn’t just about getting in early; it’s about strategically planning your morning to hit the most popular rides with the least amount of waiting. It’s a hustle from the moment you wake up, aiming to be among the first in the park and quickly onto your favorite attractions. For more on all things rope drop, check out my overview here.
Preparing for Rope Drop
In Advance of Your Trip – Lightning Lanes
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of rope drop strategy, let’s chat about Lightning Lanes. If you’re new to Disney lingo, think of these as fast passes that allow you to skip the regular standby lines. You have the option to purchase the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass before you arrive, but here’s the deal—Hollywood Studios is one of the parks where you might want to get it.
If you do decide to snag the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, I recommend booking these rides in this order of priority:
- Slinky Dog Dash
- Tower of Terror
- Toy Story Mania
When it comes to the Individual Lightning Lanes options, if you’re going to only purchase one I would highly recommend Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
Arriving at Hollywood Studios
To make the most of Rope Drop, aim to arrive at the park gates 45 to 60 minutes before Early Entry if you’re targeting headliners like Slinky Dog Dash or Rise of the Resistance. For other attractions, 30 minutes before the park opens is sufficient.
Transportation to Hollywood Studios
- Walking or Skyliner: Ideal for guests at nearby resorts.
- Disney Buses: Available from most Disney resorts, but factor in waiting times.
- Rideshare or Personal Vehicle: Convenient for off-site guests, though parking takes extra time.
Depending on which Disney World resort you’re staying at the transportation options will vary. For a full understanding of all the different Disney transportation options take a look at my transportation guide.
Early Entry: A Special Advantage for Resort Guests
Disney Resort and Good Neighbor Hotel guests enjoy Early Entry, accessing Hollywood Studios 30 minutes before regular opening. This is prime time for popular attractions with shorter wait times.
Rope Drop Strategies at Hollywood Studios
Rope Drop at Hollywood Studios is a strategic play that can set the tone for your entire day. With the park’s most popular attractions, Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash, drawing the biggest crowds, having a plan is key. Whether you’re a Star Wars enthusiast, a Toy Story fan, or a thrill-seeker, I’ve got you covered with tailored strategies to make the most of your morning.
Option 1: For Star Wars Fans
First Stop – Rise of the Resistance
Begin your adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Head straight to Galaxy’s Edge and join the Resistance in an epic battle against the First Order. Being one of the first in line here is crucial, as wait times can soar quickly after park opening.
Second Stop – Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
After your mission on Rise of the Resistance, pilot the Millennium Falcon on a thrilling smuggling mission. This immersive experience is a must-do for Star Wars fans and offers a slightly less intense crowd immediately after Rope Drop.
The fastest way back to the Star Wars: Galaxy Edge is the following: When you enter Hollywood Studios, head straight towards the Chinese Theater, and veer slightly to the left. ABC Commissary will be on your right. At the end of the path, take a hard right and head through the tunnel in front of you. This will bring you into Galaxy’s Edge. You’ll find the entrance to Rise of Resistance on your left.
Option 2: For Toy Story Fans
First Stop – Slinky Dog Dash
Make a beeline for Toy Story Land and hop aboard Slinky Dog Dash. This family-friendly coaster offers fun thrills and fantastic views of the park. Arriving early helps beat the long queues that form later in the day.
Second Stop – Toy Story Mania
Continue your Toy Story adventure with Toy Story Mania. This interactive 4D shoot-’em-up ride is a blast for guests of all ages. It’s a popular attraction, but the lines are usually shorter compared to Slinky Dog Dash, making it a great second stop.
The quickest way to Toy Story Land is to head straight for the Chinese Theater when you enter Hollywood Studios. You’ll want to veer to the right and head down the stairs. Take a left then an immediate right. You should see Woody in the distance. As you enter Toy Story Land the entrance to Slinky Dog Dash will be on your right.
Option 3: For Thrill Seekers
First Stop – Tower of Terror
Start your day with a drop into the Twilight Zone on the Tower of Terror. This iconic ride offers heart-pounding thrills and a unique experience every time. Getting here early usually means shorter wait times and a more eerie atmosphere.
Second Stop – Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
After surviving the Tower, head over to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith. This high-speed indoor coaster, complete with a rocking soundtrack, is perfect for thrill-seekers. Early mornings often mean less waiting time to board your super-stretch limo.
To make your way to the Tower of Terror, head towards the Chinese Theater when entering Hollywood Studios. About halfway down the path, you’ll see another path heading hard right. Take this path. You’ll see the Tower of Terror at the end of the path.
Important Considerations for Rise of the Resistance
While Rise of the Resistance is a must-see for Star Wars fans (and, everyone) and a top priority during Rope Drop, it’s important to be aware of some of its operational nuances. This attraction is known for experiencing a fair amount of downtime, which can impact your day’s plan.
Opting for Individual Lightning Lane
Given its popularity and the potential for operational delays, securing an Individual Lightning Lane for Rise of the Resistance is highly recommended. This not only saves you from potentially long waits but also provides a buffer against unexpected downtimes. By booking a Lightning Lane, you can enjoy other attractions and return for your scheduled time, ensuring you don’t miss out on this incredible experience. The extra cost is worth it, when you factor in the amount of time it will save you during the day.
Be Prepared for Variability in Opening Times
It’s also worth noting that Rise of the Resistance may not open immediately with the park. There have been instances where the attraction opens later than the scheduled Rope Drop time. This unpredictability is another reason why opting for Lightning Lane can be advantageous. It allows you to adjust your morning schedule without missing out on one of Hollywood Studios’ most sought-after experiences.
Beyond the First Rides
- Target Other Major Attractions: Plan your route for other popular rides based on proximity and wait times.
- Short Wait Alternatives: If headliners are crowded, pivot to attractions like Star Tours or Alien Swirling Saucers.
Enhancing Your Morning Experience
Balancing Efficiency with Enjoyment
While rushing to rides is tempting, take time to enjoy the park’s unique atmosphere in the morning. Grab a coffee and soak in the magic!
Pro Tips for a Successful Hollywood Studios Rope Drop
- Plan Your Route: Know the layout of the park and decide which attractions you’ll head to first. You can find maps of each of the parks within the My Disney Experience app for your mobile device.
- Stay Informed: Use the My Disney Experience App for real-time updates on wait times and park news. If you’re ok with a little additional cost, I would highly recommend the Touring Plans app, the wait times tend to be more accurate.
- Keep Energized: Bring snacks and water, and wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking and standing a lot.
- Be Patient: Expect some level of crowd and queue, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Capture the Moments: Don’t forget to take photos and enjoy the smaller, magical details of the park.
Your day at Hollywood Studios is about creating unforgettable memories. With this guide, you’re equipped to navigate the crowds, minimize wait times, and maximize the fun. Embrace the early start, enjoy the thrill of being among the first on your favorite rides, and immerse yourself in every magical moment.
